The White Horse Rapids became known as the greatest peril on the trail of ’98.
The construction of the Whitehorse hydro-electric dam in 1958 tamed Miles Canyon
and has replaced the once foaming White Horse Rapids with Schwatka Lake reservoir.

HIGHWAY
The official start of
construction on the Alaska
Highway took place on
March 8, 1942. More than
7,000 military supplies
including 5,000 trucks,
904 tractors, 374 graders
and 174 shovels were used
by about 11,000 service
men that worked 12 to 16
hour days to complete the
highway in just over eight
months.
