THE REAL PEOPLE
AWAIT YOU
Inuvialuit means “the real people” and describes
the descendants of the Thule people who settled
on the edge of the Beaufort Sea, at the mouth of
the Mackenzie River, more than 800 years ago.
Today, most Inuvialuit live in the communities
of Aklavik, Inuvik, Paulatuk, Sachs Harbour,
Tuktoyaktuk and Ulukhaktok.
They are represented by Inuvialuit
Regional Corporation (IRC),
established in 1984 to continually
improve the economic, social
and cultural wellbeing of the Inuvialuit
through the application of one of
Canada’s oldest land claims treaties:
the Inuvialuit Final Agreement.
GETTING OUT ON THE LAND
IRC supports Inuvialuit in reconnecting with our cultural roots through
land-based initiatives. Programs provide resources to help families
spend extended time at their camps, reinforcing traditional practices
and wellbeing.
Project Jewel, a culturally grounded wellness program, offers support
for individuals managing stress and trauma, using the land as a place
for healing. Additionally, the Inuvialuit Harvesters Assistance Program
helps sustain traditional harvesting, ensuring the continuation of vital
cultural practices.
