Winter is Wonderful

Winter is Wonderful

Although most visitors experience Skagway between April and September, winter offers a whole new perspective on this part of the world. The hectic pace of the summer is replaced by the easygoing lifestyle of the winter. Snow begins to fall in October and skiing and other winter activities are in full swing by November. There are extensive ski trails just outside of town as well as access to snowmachine trails. Northern lights viewing is possible in town and on the White Pass summit on a clear night.

Other winter activities include the Annual Yuletide Festival held in December, the Trail of ’98 Sled Dog Race in February and the Buckwheat Ski Classic held in March each year. The road to Skagway is maintained year-round and affords access to the Yukon and Whitehorse for additional outdoor recreational opportunities. We also have scheduled air service with up to three different air carriers. If you relish a tranquil environment, you will love Skagway in the winter. Sit and watch the gentle snowfall while drinking a steaming cup of cocoa. Or maybe enjoy one of our beautiful brisk clear days. To catch up on what’s happening in town, stop by one of the local cafés. You may be the outdoors type, and if that’s the case it’s never far to go snowmobiling, or cross country skiing. Come and join us for our time of peace, and find out why we live here year round.
