Winter in Whitehorse

Winter in Whitehorse

Despite short daylight hours, Yukoners don’t just tolerate winter; they embrace it.

The view of the Yukon River is never more picturesque than when Grey Mountain is covered with snow and sparkling in the winter sun.

Cross-country skiers enjoy the vast network of world-class trails at the Mount McIntyre Recreation Centre and throughout the city. There are miles of trails for snowmobilers as well. Check to see if a curling bonspiel or hockey game is taking place while you’re in town: watching a game is a great way to spend a winter night.

The mercury may dip to -40°C, but that doesn’t curb our annual Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Festival celebrations, where you can enjoy snow sculpture displays, can-can dancing, winter sport competitions, and more. We bundle up to cheer on the mushers and dog teams who travel through Whitehorse and Fairbanks during the Yukon Quest sled dog race. The Frostbite Music Festival warms audiences in Whitehorse with musical performances in the middle of winter.

Whitehorse winter days may be short and chilly, but our citizens offer long stays and warm hospitality. You won’t find a warmer welcome anywhere.
